Sunday School

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Sunday School informational page! My name is Andrea Faches and I am the director of the Sunday School for 2008-2009. On this page you will find the curriculum we are using for each grade, the teachers' names, major Sunday School events and other pertinent Sunday School information. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments. We are regularly looking to improve the quality of our program and are eager for parent volunteers. If you are interested in offering your time and talents to our Sunday School program, please contact me. We need homeroom parents, substitute teachers and people to review and further develop our curricula.

Classes begin right after communion and end at noon. Please help to make sure that the students and teachers get in line for communion first so that they won't be late for class! We appreciate your support!

Oratorical Festival February 1, 2009

Oratorical History/Information

Introduced in 1983, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival provides Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to write and talk about their faith. The Oratorical Festival Program begins at the Parish Level and is divided into two divisions; the Junior Division for students in the 7th to 9th grades and the Senior Division for teenagers in the 10th to 12th grades.

The top speakers in each division advance to the district level and if selected become one of two finalists in their division to represent their district at their Metropolis Oratorical Festival. The top speaker in each division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different Metropolis each year.

All eighteen finalists at the Archdiocese Finals participate in a weekend of activities, the highlight of which is the delivery of their speeches on Saturday morning. The Oratorical Festival Scholarship Foundation provides college scholarships in the amount of $2000, $1500, and $1000 to the top three speakers in each division. In addition, those finalists who receive a rank of Honorable Mention are awarded a $500 United States Savings Bond.

Please watch for details of this grand event.

2009 National Finals - Logo Contest

Members of St. George (young and old) are encouraged to submit logo designs for the St. John Chrysostom 2009 National Finals. Submissions should incorporate the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival icon designed with a local flair, Twin-Cities specific flair. Past national final logos have incorporated the icon with uniquely local themed concepts like: New York-New York City Sky Line, Norfolk-A Mermaid, Denver-a Western Theme, San Francisco-a cable car, Miami-palm trees). All submissions must be made to Andrea Faches by December 15th, 2009.
